This Thursday at noon the 2010 CVIM Boston Marathon team will meet during our normally scheduled track workout for some photos with our honorary coaches Greg Fredericks, and Joe and Sue Paterno. This year, we’d like to ask any NVRC runners that are running either the Pittsburgh or Pocono Marathons and are willing to campaign for donations for CVIM to join us for the photo shoot.
The only appropriate response to the great need of these difficult times is even greater compassion. The local running community has been indescribably important to CVIM’s ability to care for our neighbors in difficult situations. With your help, we can ensure CVIM is able to provide urgently needed medical and dental care to families and individuals who are struggling to keep food on the table from day to day, let alone afford necessary health care.
Please contact John Domico at domico@cse.psu.edu if you are interested or would like more information. Every cent you raise will go directly to caring for CVIM’s patients. Equally important, every stride of your 26.2 miles will feel a little lighter knowing that your running is helping so many people.
Thursday Track Report: Always Looking For Excuses
Written by Bwana
It looked deceptively like Spring, and there was even email chatter that today would be the first outdoor workout of the season. But it looked warmer than it actually was. Jim Myers, John Domico, Tom Cali, Jim Moore, Marty Klanchar, Bob Cornwall, John Sheakoski, Judd Michael, Mark Fedkin, Marv Hall, Costas Maranas, Jonathan Thurley, Mark Traband, Dana Todd, Martijn Westhoff, Mike Weyandt, Mark Lee, John Wilcock, Jim Laudermilch, Jessica Wekke, newcomer Randy Moore, Esther Prins, Kim Nelson, Ann Marie Oldani, Janet Jonson, and Marty Mazur headed for the track under sunny skies, but brisk breezes. All but Myers, Lee, and Weyandt went inside.
Bwana spread the optimism: this might be the last indoor track workout of the season! Easy for HIM to say. He's got two weeks to make good on that because he'll be hanging out on the Med coast next week. But in anticipation of the move outdoors, Bwana gave the "benchmark" workout: 3X3X300. There were a few complaints after 2, so Bwana knows he chose right.
It was a good turnout, despite the eve of Spring Break. But there are a few people who still need to get out and get ready Spring racing. I know Greg Luna has some class conflict, Tara Murray is waiting for Springtime to do the final thaw on her frozen toes, and Cheryl Capone is nursing her bum tendons (unlike Bwana, who is chronically nursing the tendons on his bum). But where were Greg Dillon, Lance Bland, Ron Cunfer, and Matt Soccio? What were their excuses?
Note: As mentioned above, Bwana will be doing his track workout next week in the South of France. After hitting the tapas bars in Barcelona, taking a wine tour in the Côtes du Rhône, eating bouillabaisse and cassoulet, Bwana will need a few double workouts when he gets back. But you lot won't have those excuses!

2009 Race Series and Volunteer of the Year Awards
Written by Marty Mazur
The Awards for the 2009 NVRC Race Series and Volunteer of the Year were given at the February 2 Club meeting. Last year's Race Series winners were Christine Rodgers (1st), Meira Minard (2nd), and Alan Effrig (3rd). The Volunteer of the Year Awards went to Marty Mazur (1st), Mike Casper and Jerry Steffy (tie for 2nd), and Cheryl Capone (3rd). There's a more detailed write-up in the Meeting Minutes.
The NVRC Race Series and Volunteer Awards competitions are open to all NVRC members. The Race Series rewards regular race competition as well as placement at many local races. The Volunteer Awards recognize those who give their time to the Club through Club service and race volunteering. This year's Race Series began with the First Night 5K on New Year's Eve. Tallies for the current year will start appearing regularly upon the completion of the Indoor Mile Series. For more information on the NVRC Race Series
