Colyer Lake and Rothrock State Forest
February 8, 2014

A record 52 runners arrived to several inches of snow in the unplowed south parking lot of Colyer Lake to kick off the 2014 Tussey Teasers series on the Tussey mOUnTaiNBACK course. The six run series continues through late June. This run is billed as “Teaser #0.” Runners who complete Teasers #1-5 are eligible for a grand prize. Those who complete all six runs earn a bonus prize.

At the fourth year of this run, second year as a 10K, the lot looked like an urban disaster area, with cars parked and double parked in all directions. The temperature was stuck at 9 degrees, but winds were calm at the start. The first part of the course was mostly clear, and the latter part on Boal Gap Road had been plowed but was still snow covered.

Before the start, Amy Paster introduced the Tussey mOUnTaiNBACK's 2014 nonprofit beneficiary, the Cancer Survivors' Association, a local support community offering Centre County residents living with cancer encouragement and an opportunity to learn skills, gather information, and meet social and emotional needs. You can learn more at http://www.cancersurvive.org/. Amy is a past president of the Nittany Valley Running Club and a board member of CSA.

The first three men came in under the course mark left last year by Daniel Craighead. Andy Cunningham paced the leaders, followed by Robert Furmanek and Brian Garthwaite. The women’s field saw five runners finish under the 2013 mark set by Kelsey Hatzell. Keely Henninger was first, followed by Emily Fertig and Meira Minard.

Several runners improved on their 2013 times: Marie Garmat, 7 minutes faster; John Fegyveresi, 6 minutes faster; Susan Bedsworth and Brent Kelsey, 5 minutes faster; Margie Costello, 25 seconds faster; Barb Kelsey, 22 seconds faster; Norm Horn, 2 seconds faster.

A gentle breeze added some chill during the finishing time, and runners pushed several cars out of the snow as folks headed for home and saner weekend pursuits. Thanks to Subway for post-run party sandwiches to celebrate victory over the elements.

The next Tussey Teaser is on March 8, the Laurel Run Switchbacker 10K, an out and back on Leg 1 of the mOUnTaiNBACK course.

Subway provided post-race food. But first: Conquer the hill!

Runners were itching to get going. It was cold!

Keely Henninger was the youngest runner, the first female finisher, and 4th place overall.

John Fegyveresi wore his number on his head.

Tom Cali, in red, wore his number lightly. His age, that is. He was the oldest finisher, yet came in the top 10!
