A Women's Running Blog With Added Spice

As one of the webmasters of the NVRC site, my name is plastered all over it. And because of this, I get emails several times a year from out-of-towners looking to join one of our Weekend Group Runs. Last weekend, we hosted a couple of ladies on a 10 mile run through Spring Creek Canyon. The two sisters, 'Salty' and 'Cinnamon' are among the authors of a group blog, Salty Running. By my count, there are ten authors, each with a "spicy" handle. (In keeping with their blog style, they'll remain anonymous here, too). They're all women, and the writing tends to center on women's running, but I'm sure there's something of interest to everyone. Recent topics include some of the usual runner talk: training, olympic predictions, marathons, ultras; but also some spicier topics: running and pregnancy, a runner's guide to bouncing boobs, pre-race sex, and, most recently, 5 Types of Running Guys. In that last post, Salty talks about the kinds of guys women have to put up with, especially since they're usually outnumbered on group runs. The thing is that Salty ends the article with a really nice shout-out to the NVRC and her experience on our group run. It seems we "flunked" all the tests! Give the blog a visit.

Knütes is an international company with local roots. They manufacture warm apparel made from recycled plastics. They are offering a variety of cool weather running apparel and accessories with the NVRC logo. If you need a hat, head band, neck gaiter, or pouch, visit their NVRC page:
http://www.knuetes.com/eng/knuetes-shop/nittany-valley-running-club.html
And while you’re there, check out the rest of their site. If you see something on the site that you’d like to see with an NVRC logo, let me know and we’ll get that in their shop!
The NVRC now has logo car magnets for sale. They are $2 each. How do you get one? From Cheryl Capone. These are the current options, but she hopes to add more options at a later date. Method of payment: Cash or check to the NVRC.
1. Campus mail or stop by Cheryl's office at 303 Wartik Lab.
2. The next club meeting at HiWay Pizza on Tuesday, April 2.
3. She will also try to bring them to a few races.
You can find available other NVRC Club merchandise under Club/Merchandise under the main menu above.

Nittany Track and Field youth club will start cross country training season on August 21st. Kids of ages from 8 to 18 are invited to join the club practice, which will be held on the former High School cross country course near the State High School South Building Monday through Thursday 5:45 to 7:15 pm. In addition our Sunday runs from 4:00 to 5:30 pm will go from various parks around State College.
NTF XC is a great running program for all levels and is friendly to beginners! We teach the kids the basics of distance running, work on general endurance, strength, and speed while having a lot of fun! Everyone will have an opportunity to participate in some youth cross country meets, if they like, and also we will be building a few age-group teams for team competition with other youth clubs at the AAU Districts in November. If your children would like to try it – welcome!
The Club will hold an informational meeting on Monday August 20th, at 6 pm, at the High School Track. If you have additional questions please e-mail Mark Fedkin at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or check Club’s website www.ntfxc.com. We welcome volunteers from the running community, so please contact Mark if interested in coaching or helping with workouts on any days.

NVRC Supports United Way Day Of Caring

The bike path along the south side of the Penn State golf courses is a favorite route for bicycling commuters and for runners getting their lunchtime exercise. You're off the roads, on a soft surface, and you've got great scenery. But the shrubs and vines along the path do tend to get overgrown and occasionally need to be pruned back. This helps visibility for bikers so they can see and avoid slower runners and walkers, as well as the occasional groundhog and bunny. Cheree Jones and Sheryl Balkey recently organized a crew from SF & Company to get this job done as part of the United Way Day of Caring. The NVRC pitched in by sending a cash gift used to pay for refreshment for the crew. Here are a couple of pictures.
