After a multi-year hiatus, the Nittany Valley Running Club brought back the NVRC Race Series Cup in 2008. Old-timers may recall that in the 1980s the Club had a race series where points were given for race participation and performance. The main difference between the old and the new Series is that there are now competitions for both the Race Series Cup and for Volunteer of the Year.
The 2009 competition in both categories was again, like the 2008 competition, quite close most of the year. In fact, the Race Series winner wasn't decided until December. Christine Rodgers won the Series Cup, followed closely by Meira Minard. Third place went to Alan Effrig. Last Year's Volunteer of the Year winner Dave Eggler really deserves a lifetime achievement award. Dave has removed himself from competition for this award, but we keep track of his points to give everyone else something to shoot for. It's a tough standard. The Volunteer of the Year was Marty Mazur, who despite his Club duties and race volunteering earned just over half of Eggler's total. There was a tie for second place betweenJerry Steffy and Mike Casper. And third place went to Cheryl Capone. An awards ceremony for the winners was held at the NVRC Meeting in February.
The 2010 NVRC Race Series began with the 2009 First Night Resolution Run 5K on December 31, 2009. Race points and volunteer points will be tracked and awards for Race Series Cup winner and Volunteer of the Year for 2010 will be given at the regular club meeting in February 2011.
