The third Indoor Mile meet featured exciting races in all heats, some very, very close. In the first, Rob Liebers a late substitute, was placed in the wrong heat and ran away from the field, winning it in 5:08.94. John McGraw was second in 5:22.42. Cory Neff, continuing to improve each meet, was third in 5:35.48. Frank Rodenbaugh and Michael Goldfine also clocked improvements over their times of a couple of weeks ago. And Bree Studenka shook off what was getting her down in the last meet and took over 11 seconds off her time, but still was barely over her goal of sub-6 minutes. And Marty Mazur and Marty Klanchar ran stride for stride for half a mile until Klanchar opened the gap. Marty K felt like he had lead in his legs and was off of his time of the last meet. Marty M was just glad to be back on his legs, completing his first Indoor Mile in 2 years.

The second heat had some of the closest battles. Constantin Schrieber, continuing to strip a half-dozen seconds or more off his time each meet, battled Bob Long and Greg Learn for most of the race until he put on a great kick to win in 4:47.67. Long was second in 4:48.55 and Learn third in 4:50.20. But the closest grouping was for 10th through 14th places. Dan Green, Greg Larsen, Alan Effrig, Beth Herndon, and  Matt Smith crossed the finish line in a big pile within less than a second. There was only 0.01 second separating Herndon and Smith.

The fast heat saw the return of Nick Berra, NVRC Indoor Mile Open and Masters record holder. Nick lives in Harrisburg, so it's a bit of a trip for him. Nick's challenge was William Appman, who has been appearing and improving week by week. Appman tore out at the gun and led by a wide margin for the first half mile. But Nick is an old pro at pacing and picking away at a lead. With two laps to go, Nick could sense that Appman was vulnerable. Berra took the lead with a lap to go and threw in a kick for good measure, winning in 4:31.47, a good 7 seconds off his Club mark. Appman was second in 4:34.15, his best time of the year. And David Moyer was third in 4:40.43. There was another pile-up for 7th through 9th places, with Derek Gerberich, Andy Cunningham, and Jonathan Fleming finishing within a second of each other.

Next Saturday will be the last meet of the Indoor Mile Series. Nick Berra can win, but he has to show. You need two appearances to win the Series. By taking 8 seconds off his previous time, William Appman has the best two meet total, but is vulnerable to a couple of runners who are otherwise close to him. But they'll have to show up to win. On the women's side, Beth Herndon is in a big lead, but needs to come back and take back her boyfriend Greg Larsen's victory over her today. Next week will also feature the 3K race and a predicted time contest. See the Indoor Mile Series page for details.
