Runners start up the hill...

...leaving Colyer Lake behind them.

A mother killdeer was vigilant most of the time the runners were gone.
|
But Pam Scott did get a sneak peek at her eggs.

|
Pat Singletary was the first man down the mountain, and in record time.
|
Pam Scott not only took pictures. She made some delicious scones!

Friday's gentle rain finally halted in the early morning, leaving a damp surface and cool temps for the start of this year's mettle test, which gathered 36 runners. Despite predicted temps reaching into the 60s, a cooling headwind on the return run kept conditions prime. This helped produce some very good times, including course records in both the men's and women's races. Patrick Singletary lopped 26 seconds off the mark etched by Artie Gilkes, also setting a new master's time. Costas Maranas sliced 4 minutes off his previous effort to claim second. Nick Downs and Terry Reid tied for third. In the women's race Meira Minard slivered 11 seconds off her own course record to claim the women's title. Cheryl Capone took second, and 16-year-old Kelson Goldfine took third.
Three runners are in the hunt for the Tussey Teasers grand door prize, having completed the first four teasers: Jeanette Peters, Terry Reid and Denise Weaver. They'll need to run the final Teaser, the Bear Meadows Made-in-the-Shade, on June 28 to qualify. That run is a 7.0 or 10.6 Miler, another free run with water stops and the chance to choose one's distance - as late as mile 4.5 into the run.
Five more pairs of gently used shoes were collected for the Soles4Souls program. Shoes will also be collected at the June 28 event and several others throughout the year. For information on the program, visit http://www.tusseymountainback.com/soles4souls.html.
If you're ready for more summer runs in the forest, the 2009 mOUnTaiNBACK Discovery Training Series, covering the entire mOUnTaiNBACK course over eight Thursday evenings, will start on August 6 and continue through September 24. Details are available at http://www.tusseymountainback.com/events.html.
Thanks to Mike Philippe and Pam Scott for timing, and to Pam for bringing delectable cinnamon chip scones, bananas and OJ!
