Rothrock State Forest

Fifty-nine runners took to the snow-covered switchbacks of Laurel Run Road to usher in the first day of spring break. Temps were mild, spirits high. This was Tussey Teaser #1 of the 2016 series, which continues through June.

Several runners turned this into quite a marathon training run by putting in additional full up-and-down 6.2-mile “reps” before the start. Mike Renz and Seth Senior did an unthinkable three pre-race reps, Tom Cali, Mike Zimmerman, Andy Maguire, Bob Shafer, Jeff Smucker and Dan Coughlin did two, and Dean Capone ran one-and-an-half.

Then it was time for the Switchbacker to start. “There was a group of three of us most of the way up,” remembers frequent pace-setter Patrick Singletary, “Andy Cunningham, myself, another runner [Adam Russell], and Luc O trailing a little back behind us.” Singletary was first to reach the turnaround point at the end of the final switchback. “On the way down I started to hear footsteps, and Luc in short order motored right past me. I tried to keep up but his turnover down the mountain was too quick.” O, of Williamsburg, reached the finish first, with Singletary, of State College, 21 seconds back and Russell, of Rome, taking third.

Christine Reynolds, of Newfield, NY, led the women’s field, with Angel Burd, of Huntingdon, just 33 seconds back and State College’s Erica Pitcavage in third.

Youth showed grit today as well, with State College brothers Neil and Matthew Maguire and Cameron Drahnak, of Hastings, vanquishing the up-and-down with impressive determination.

All runners completing Tussey Teasers #1 through #5 will be eligible to win a special drawing prize at the end of Teaser #5. Tussey Teaser #0, in February, was the series’ unofficial kickoff.

The next Tussey Teaser on April 10 extends this run into an 11-mile point-to-point, ending at Whipple Dam State Park.
