2nd Annual Jeremy Herbstritt Memorial 5K

Earlier in the week,
the weather had threatened to meddle, but when the day came for the 5K
honoring
the memory of Jeremy Herbstritt, there was nothing but blue sky,
recreation-minded
clouds and a gentle breeze.
About 200 runners toed
the line and set off on this certified course on the Penn State campus. Paul Fritzsche, 30, of the team Big
Cat Aquatics, took the
men’s title
in 16:39. Sydney
Schaefer, 27, won the
women’s race
in 21:31. The field included a number of first-time race participants.
Runners
and walkers ranged in age from 3-year-old Wilhemina Guillard, who ran
the first
2 minutes and completed the rest in the stroller under the footpower of
parents
Grant and Sarah, finishing in 32:17, to Paula Jech, 64, who posted a
28:10. The
winning team was Big Cat Aquatics. The Herbstritt family was
represented by a
number of family members, including Jeremy’s dad, Mike, and siblings
Joe (who
didn’t run due to a minor skateboarding injury) and Stephanie. About
$2,000 was
raised for the Jeremy Herbstritt Memorial Fund, with the ultimate goal
to build
a track for the Bellefonte community.
Mike Herbstritt had
nothing but praise for all who took part and helped make the event
happen. “Our
family would like to say how much we appreciate everyone for running,
volunteering, planning the event, and continuing to honor Jeremy. I was
overwhelmed with the compassion of all of the volunteers. As I ran, I
tried to
imagine Jeremy running the race with me; I saw so much caring in
everyone I
talked to, I saw so much of my son in everyone. All of you are great!

together,

Jerry Steffy for timing and finish line detail, to the scores of other
volunteers who helped out beforehand and on race day, and to Kris

year’s RD, for coming up from her new home in Maryland to help.
