2003 Nittany Valley Running Club Indoor Mile #1

by Marty Mazur

The first Nittany Valley Running Club Indoor Mile of 2003 was held at the Horace Ashenfelter III Multi-Sport Facility. Ten runners signed up on fairly short notice to participate in the first of this year's two races. Two runners had to scratch due to illness. The 8 man field was a pretty quick one, with all runners finishing under 6:15, and one finisher, Scott Falkner, going under 5:00 to finish in 4:52.4. Most of the runners were fairly close to their target times, and most went a bit faster. One notable exeption was John Pringle, who offered the conservative estimate of 6:45 for his finishing time. After falling behind Marty Mazur in lap 3, John hung with Mazur for the rest of the race. He made his final push heading into the last turn, edging ahead of Marty at the start of the final straight. John had quite a head of steam; it's hard to gain 2 full seconds on an opponent in the space of just 50 meters, especially if that opponent still hasn't given up!  John Pringle broke 6:00 with a time of 5:58.8. Marty Mazur finished in 6:00.7, which I believe, in the race business, is likened to kissing your sister. It should be easy for Marty to shave off that seven-tenths at next week's race. Catching Pringle might be another matter. There were a few other close races, but none that came down to the last straightaway.

The NVRC signed up 5 new members at this week's race. The second and final indoor mile will be held on Friday, February 14, at 5:00.
