The second
Nittany Valley Running Club Indoor Mile of the season 2005-6 had a
bigger turnout than the first. And faster! Not only was the top time
faster than the first meet's winning time, but nearly everyone who ran
the first meet improved their second time around. In the first heat,
Brian McNally let
from start to finish and crossed the line in 4:48.17. Karl
Shellenberger also broke 5 minutes and Andy Cunningham took third.
Lance Bland wrapped up the Master's title again, taking fourth in a
time a shade faster than his last effort. Mark Fedkin also showed
improvement in fifth place. Martha Nelson is following in a fine
tradition of women who win local long distance races and also show
great legs in the shorter ones. Just as Beth Parker, a two-time winner
of the Nittany Valley Half-Marathon, continually bested the other gals
in the Indoor Miles a couple of years ago, Martha won December's Half
and had the best time in today's mile, finishing in 5:28.99. Tim Brenza
was Most Improved, taking nearly half a minute off his finish of two
weeks ago. Tim Spigelmyer and Meira Minard continued their rivalry from
the first meet. They both moved up to Heat 1 and took several seconds
off their last finishes, both going under 5:50. And Sarah Pabian made
her first showing of the year, going all 8 laps in just a tad over 6.
She'll be back to shave off some time.
The
second, 'slow' heat was again a nearly an all-Masters event. Marty
Mazur was determined to go sub-6. He led from the gun to about the
middle of lap 8, only to be passed by Dan Guss, who had a great kick.
Dan finished in 5:55 and Marty ran a 5:58, 14 seconds better than his
last race. Marty Klanchar was a second off his previous effort, taking
third in 6:05. Jerry Steffy is gaining fast on the pack. He ran a 6:13,
shaving 14 seconds from his previous time. Erin Wyble was quite a bit
off her last race, obviously
saving her best for next week's 3000 meter run. Jim Taylor was in
comeback mode, posting a respectable 6:35 after "inconsistent
training". And Jill Keeney and George Myers both improved over their
last performances, Jill by 5 seconds and George by 23!
