2007 Nittany Valley Running Club Indoor Mile #2

The second Indoor Mile was one of the best in the history of the Indoor Mile Series. A near record turnout of 26 runners competed in two heats, and fast times were had by all. Nearly all runners who had competed in last week's Indoor Mile #1 improved, many by large margins.

In the first heat, Nate Harkins ran in his first NVRC Indoor Mile. Nate has been making his mark with the Club for the last few years, winning many Campus races, and winning last month's Nittany Half-Marathon. Nate started the race second to last week's winner, Matt Manfred. But Nate turned it up a notch on every lap, overtaking Manfred after a half mile and winning easily in 4:29. Manfred improved over last week's performance by four seconds, finishing in 4:37. First timer Sean Clark was third in 4:46. And Dave Felice, who was the Pennsylvania State Champion in the mile back in 1976, recorded the fastest Master's time in the history of the NVRC Indoor Mile Series, finishing 4th in 4:49. Also finishing in under 5 minutes were Andy Cunningham and Tim Aydin. Coming closer this week were Andy Mazur and Bill Maloney. Meira Minard was the fastest female again this week, this time faster in 5:39. And Mike Philippe and Marty Klanchar switched to the sunny side of 6 this week.

In the second heat, newcomer Duane Serpentine showed that he really belonged in the first, walking away with the win in 5:33. Second place went to first timer Joel Niemann in 5:52, and third went to last week's second heat winner, Dan Guss, who improved by four seconds to 5:54. Also improving greatly and getting closer to the 6 minute mark were Erin Wyble, Shaun Wood, and Tara Murray. Jerry Steffy and Marty Mazur extended their battle, with Marty staying ahead of Jeffy until the final straight. Pam Scott of the Beginner's Group went under 6-and-a-half this week, and Christine Rice made her return in well under 7. New Club member Kurt Schwab will do the same next week.

The first heat was blazing fast - a blur!
 Marty Mazur showed determination in Heat 2. But not enough not to be overtaken by Erin Wyble and Jerry Steffy.
