2011 Nittany Valley Running Club Indoor Mile #2

I'd like to say that for the sixth meet in a row a Club mile record was broken, and in a way, I can. For the first time in 6 meets, NO Club records were set, which establishes a Club record in itself! But that doesn't mean the field wasn't fast! Of the 32 runners who raced, 12 broke 5 minutes, and times were on average faster than last week.

In the first heat,  Mark Yoder and Rich Wendel far outpaced the field and should have been in Heat 2, finishing in 4:40.82 and 4:47.48, respectively. Jack Quindlen was third in 5:06.11. Lauren Philbrook was the fastest female in 5:17.70. Ann Skulas-Ray shaved a bit off her time of last week to place second in 5:23.87. And Kelsey Markham chopped over 5 seconds off her previous effort to take third in 5:27.92.

The fast heat was indeed that, with 10 runners breaking 5. Andy Wang took a big lead and kept it until the backstretch of lap 8, when Garrett Derringer, who put on a ferocious final quarter kick, caught him. Derringer finished in 4:37.98 and Wang was 1/3 second behind in 4:38.31. Steve Van Wert almost caught Wang, finishing third in 4:38.74. There were some other close footraces farther back in the pack as well.

Due to some miscommnications, several runners' times were not recorded and will be listed as approximate as information becomes available. Runners will have a two week break to hone their pacing. The next Indoor Mile race will be on January 28, a Friday afternoon.
