2011 Nittany Valley Running Club Indoor Mile #3

Well, it's back to breaking records. This time two were broken. We had a record turnout of 38 runners in 3 heats participate in this Indoor Mile. And the Mens Open NVRC Indoor Mile record was broken.

In the "slow" (ha!) heat, Lauren Philbrook took a big step at sewing up this year's Women's Indoor Mile crown by winning in 5;10.61. Judd Michael was second and Ann Skulas-Ray finished third. Indoor Mile Series Director Jerry Steffy made his big return to the track and finally (and handily) beat Marty Mazur, also making a comeback, who DNFed.

In Heat 2, 4 runners went under 5 minutes, which not too many years ago was about what you'd hope for in the fast heat. Tony Kresz was first in 4:48.36. Brian Beatty was second in 4:49.42. And Derek Gerberich was third in 4:53.05. Costas Maranas PRed, and Jeff Smucker put on a good showing, moving up a couple places at the end and nearly taking another..

The fast heat was lightening fast. Every runner was under 4:45, putting the entire pack within 19 seconds of the winner. Mark Burnham led most of the way, but really opened up a big lead in the last couple of laps to nip his own Club record by 0.12 seconds in 4:26.27. Nate King was second in 4:32.09, and Mark Yoder was third in 4:34:12.

The last race of the year will be Saturday, February 5. There will be heats of the mile and the 3000. The mile races will also feature a "Predicted Mile" contest. The closest to their predicted time wins a prize!
