SUE CROWE MEMORIAL 31st ANNUAL
ARTS FESTIVAL
RACES
STATE COLLEGE, PA
July 16, 2006
The 31st edition
of the Arts Festival 5 and 10K races was held Sunday 16 July 2006. This
year the race took on a special meaning because it was re-named the
"Sue Crowe Memorial Arts Festival Race" in honor of Sue Crowe, who was
killed earlier this year in an automobile accident. We were
privileged to have a number of Crowes participating in the race:
John Crowe - Boalsburg - age 12 - 24:42 in the 5K
Paul Crowe - Boalsburg - age 14 - 42:05 in the 10K
Edel Crowe - Boalsburg - age 16 - 44:46 in the 10K
Peter Crowe - Boalsburg - age20 - 45:44 in the 10K
Christina Hunsberger - Clifton Park, NY - age 25 - 42:47 in the 10K
Bob Crowe - Boalsburg - age 58 - 48:48 in the 10K
Christina was first in her age group and Paul was first in his age
group.
The new course is only two years old, so lots of course records were
set, despite the warm temperatures:

We had 220 runners finish the 5K and 305 finished the 10K. This
is down slightly from last year when we had 219 in the 5K and 316 in
the 10K
This year Brent Melius, UOC Physical Therapist and some of his
colleagues set up a tent and supplied information and much appreciated
cold compresses. They were also a big help when it came to moving
tables and cases of water. RSuper Foods were another new addition
to the race. They supplied nutritious donuts and buns. Look for them
soon in the local supermarkets. The Diner supplied the stickies, and
Pro Copy did our photocopying. UOC once again generously
sponsored the blue race t-shirts, Centre Communicatons supplied
the 2-way radios, Roaring Spring supplied water, Appalachian Outdoors,
Rapid Transit, Old Main Frame Shop, and The Spikes donated raffle
prizes. The Bicycle Shop donated the raffle grand prize - a bicycle
which was won by Paige Andrew of Lemont. Congratulations Paige and
thank you to everyone who participated in the raffle. The club
was able to raise an additional $115. Did everyone notice the new mile
markers? Remember to Thank Tom Cali of RE/MAX for those markers, you
will be seeing them at future races.
There is no way to thank everyone who pitched in and made this race the
success that it was but I am going to try. Registration was handled by
Kate P. Course design and layout by Marty M. and race day course
patrol by Marty K. Head waterboy was Jim T. Food prep by Sharon S.
Thanks to Dave E. for hauling things back and forth from the storage
unit, clean-up patrol, and keeping track of the money. The water
stations were
manned by a number of new and veteran volunteers including the
Fescemyer, Hilands, and Lesieutre familes and Lynn J. The
registration table did not get backed up once thanks to everyone who
pitched in with last minute registrations and chip hand out
including Mike C., Kate P. Kim G., Ann W., Tara M., and Sancy N.
Thanks also to Larry and Jan, Ann W., Vicki S. and everyone who helped
direct traffic on the course. Putting on a race this size takes a
lot more help than you realize, the Martys estimated that we would need
23 course monitors alone. So give yourselves a big pat on the
back.
If you know of someone who was an age group winner and they did not
receive their prize please contact me so we can hook them up with their
medal or mug. Also if you were a volunteer and did not receive a
t-shirt and would like one please contact me. If you have any
suggestions on how to make the race even better next year feel free to
contact me or any of the club officers. One suggestion that was already
mentioned was the addition of a third water station. This has been
taken under consideration.
The 2007 version of the race will be held on Sunday 15 July - See you
there
