19th Annual Nittany Valley Half-Marathon
December 1, 2002
You knew it was cold when the Moore kids, handing out bottled water at the finish line, had to tuck the
bottles inside their little coats to keep the water from freezing. For the runners, it wasn't the temperature
but the wind, which buffeted them over the last two miles, coming up the Orchard Road hill, up Park Avenue,
and past Beaver Stadium. Next year we hope for a return to the semi-tropical conditions of the past few
years.
The winner, Sean Ion, ran by himself the entire race. Sean improved on his third-place finish last year
to finish in an excellent time, considering the conditions, of 1:16:50. Steve Holmes was second and
Jeremy Bochert third. The first woman was Tanya Cutting, who earlier in the year was third in the Arts
Fest 10K. Second was Angela Eagle and third Dana Furdella. Rebecca Herman took the women masters
division and Dirk Elliott of Marathon, NY (appropriate town) the men masters division.
We appreciate our sponsors - Tom Cali the running realtor, Danone International for the water, Runners
World, and ProCopy. And we salute the volunteers who did double and triple duty since there was such a
shortage. Steven Bodner helped with registration and directed runners at a corner, Theresa Zablonsky
(we think) helped with registration, directed runners at a corner in the beginning, and directed runners
at the end, and Leigh Moore and children Patrick, Caroline and Stuart, directed runners at a corner and
then handed out water at the end. We also thank Taylor Wasikonis, who got up early with Morgan and
helped with all the things Morgan did along the way as well as some duty outside handing out water,
Annalise who did data entry-all day, Kim Ashby who helped at an early corner then at the Rock Road corner
and then at the Porter Road corner, Bill and Rachel Smith who helped with registration, a water stop, and
then went all over the course running errands for me, John Sherer who helped with packet stuffing,
registration, ran the race, then helped with clean up, Marv Hall who helped with packet stuffing and
registration, John Pringle (we think) and daughters who helped with packet stuffing, Star Campbell who
helped with registration, Gerry Glyde who did the timing, Jean Ware who helped at a water stop, and
Willis Eggler who also helped at that water stop. We hope we didn't leave anyone out.
Your efforts were extremely appreciated-we would have not had a race without you!! Thanks for braving the
weather.
