The
23rd annual Half Marathon was run for the second time on the modified
course that loops twice on roads behind the Ag Arena before turning
onto Fox Hollow Road and joining the familiar old course that includes
scenic Spring Creek Canyon and the beloved hills in the last three
miles. Unlike last year, the roads behind the Ag Arena were not
obscured by five inches of snow. The roads were bare, the skies
were mostly sunny, and temperatures reached the low forties.
Whether it was the weather, the course, or the fact that we have a
regular home, the race attracted a record 386 registrants. That
home, the Snider Ag Arena, is arranged through NVRC member Marvin Hall,
to whom we are grateful, and was featured on this year's T-shirt.
Martha Nelson, a Penn State grad student, won the women's race for the
second straight
year in 1:19:57. Although the Half course has changed a little
over the years, that is an event record and a significant improvement
over the 1:21:22 by Donna Fidler in 1995. Miesha Marzell of State
College was second and two-time past winner Beth Parker third.
Nathan Harkins, a Penn State geosciences grad student, won the recent
Harrisburg Marathon, as well as numerous local races. He did not
disappoint in the Half, leading all the way to a win in 1:11:34. Dave
Moore, another frequent local runner, was second and Jardien
Deibler of Snydertown third. All these runners, as well as first place
age group winners, received what proved to be very popular bobble head
trophies. (Word is that the female bobble head bears a remarkable
resemblance to Martha.) Past co-race director Morgan Wasikonis
suggested these several years ago, and they have finally become
available over the Net. The age group winners included race sponsor Tom
Cali, who at 52 ran a remarkable 1:19:16, his Half PR.
This
race depends on its volunteers. Thanks to Mary Conner-Righter,
Kim Daniels, Tara Murray, Heather Katcher, and Mike Philippe on the
corners; Steve and Carol Gentry and Greg Fredericks at registration;
Emily Hassel and BenWeitman in the computer room; Jan and Larry Miles
at the finish line; Mike Barry of the Triathlon Club who led the way on
his bike; Amy Paster who brought the food; Kate Pezanowski; and the
water station crews of Lynn Jaffe and her daughter, Carol, Sandy,
Roxann, Mara Ziegler and daughters Kieryn and Brynna, Beth Scott and
daughters, and Liz, Katie, Dana, Kayla, and Tessa Kisenwether, who were
at their usual post in Houserville.
