2007 Nittany Valley Half-Marathon

The Weather Could Have Been a Lot Worse

Over the 24 years of the Half Marathon, and the Marathon preceding it, the days preceding the event are seasonal: crisp, often sunny, no snow. On event day winter is unleashed. Weather forecast this year: Snow beginning Saturday midnight, 1-3 inches, followed by sleet, freezing rain, and rain continuing all day. Actual weather: Snowed overnight 1 inch. That was it. Phew! Race Director nightmare avoided. The initial two loops behind the Ag Arena were snow-covered and slick in places, but after the runners hit the main roads, conditions were good.

439 runners registered for the race, a new record. Because of the predicted weather, many pre-registered did not come, but still 355 finished, almost the record number of last year. That number of registrants ensures that a nice check will go to Centre Volunteers in Medicine, which cares for the medically unserved and underserved.

For the second year in a row, Nate Harkins was the overall mens winner, in 1:12:35, only a minute slower than his last year's new-course record and an excellent time in the conditions. Nate, a Geosciences grad student, trains at altitude in the Himalayas. Dave Moore, at 22 a State College racing veteran, almost repeated his second place finish from last year but was edged out by Kip Hoffman of Watsontown. The women's race was won by Annie Brewer of Newfield, NY, followed by Kate Williamston of Malvern and Abby Hewitt of Greensburg. The new Clydesdale division was taken by Matt Mauclair of Oakmont in a very good 1:30:51.

Two of the race sponsors, Tom Cali of Tom Cali ReMax Centre Realty and Tim Moir of TAG Communications Services, ran the race. Tom, as usual, wiped his age division. Other sponsors are Rapid Transit running store in State College, Coca-Cola Waters, who furnished the bottles of water at the end of the race, and ProCopy, which furnished the race brochures.
