Attendees: Dave Eggler (treasurer), Amy Blake (president), Tara Murray (secretary/archivist), Marty Mazur (communications director), Marty Klanchar (membership director), Dave DeGroote (webmaster), Jake Clements (race series coordinator), John Wilcock (Nittany Valley Half Marathon race director), Bob Shafer (newly minted marathoner), John Iceland, David Lloyd

Due to icy roads, attendance was smaller than usual and roughly the same for the board and membership meetings, with people drifting in through the board meeting.

Board Meeting

Shoe recycling: Dave DeGroote presented information about an organization that reuses and recycles used running shoes. There is no cost to the club and the provided box would fit in a car so it could be taken to races and other events. Dave will coordinate a trial run.

Self defense workshop: Tara will work on scheduling a workshop for a Friday evening in February.

Wilderness training: Mike Casper emailed the board about sponsoring wilderness training. He has a presenter in mind but would need space.

Grants: Dave Eggler distributed a list of grants distributed in 2013 and 2014. The 2014 numbers do not include the Nittany Valley Half Marathon. The board agreed to fund Jayson Jackson's request to send St. Joseph's Catholic Academy runners to Nike XC Nationals.

Race series: Jake has more responsibility at his job and will need a replacement or significant assistance in 2015. He will complete the 2014 tallies. He will contact Alan Effrig, who previously expressed interest in helping with the series.

Generator: The board approved Dave Eggler's request to trade in the current generator for a larger one that will better suit our needs in cold conditions.

Membership Meeting

Renewals: Marty Klanchar has submitted our renewals for USATF (3 years) and RRCA. He has also sent renewal notices to NVRC members up for renewal. He reminded everyone that NVRC memberships are now on a calendar year.

Nittany Valley Half Marathon: Registration is lower than at this time last year, but people may be waiting until race day with an eye on the weather. (The forecast looks good.) Packet stuffing will start at noon at the Ag Arena for anyone who wants to help.

Millheim pool fundraiser: Together, club members contributed $250 to help keep the Millheim pool open. The pool hosts a triathlon in the summer. The organizers are very appreciative of NVRC support.

Election results: All NVRC officers were re-elected for 2015.

Indoor Mile Series: The new Penn State track & field coach is supportive of the series. We will again have four races, on Jan. 10, Jan. 17, Jan. 30, and Feb. 6, in conjunction with Penn State meets. The final meet will also include a 3,000-meter run. Everyone must register by 5 p.m. on the Wednesday before the race. Marty Mazur will send reminders on Friday or Saturday before each meet. There is a participant limit of 75 people per meet so we can clear the track in time for the Penn State meet. Marty Klanchar would like 2 volunteers per meet for about an hour and a half so he can run the races. The board approved Marty's request to purchase Knütes hats for prizes.

First Night Resolution Run: Dave Eggler is directing again. He can use more volunteers on the course.

Marathoners for Medicine: Centre Volunteers in Medicine's Marathoners for Medicine team is recruiting for spring half and full marathons. Anyone who is running a spring half or full is invited to participate. CVIM sets up a fundraising web page for each runner. There is no minimum amount to raise and the team welcomes all participants. The bigger the team, the more successful the effort is. Email Jaimie Wright at This email address is being protected from spambots.
