Stiff breezes, ice on the lake, and mostly clear roads under foot greeted runners for the Colyer ‘Sno Big Deal 10K, the kickoff run of the 2021 Tussey Teasers Series. The unmaintained part of Bear Gap Road had narrow wheel tracks, which made for tricky footing in the calf-deep snow.

Mark Puleo finished 19 seconds ahead of Jason Sammut, and both slid under the standing course record set by Eric Marshall in 2016. David Kennedy was just 20 seconds back in third. Chloe Conner was the first woman finisher. Mikala Shremshock took second and Flor Parra was third.

A few runners completed their first-ever 10K today, including Staci Black.

The next run of the six-event Tussey Teasers series is the Laurel Run Switchbacker 10K, set for March 6, with start and finish at Tussey Mountain. For the series schedule and a link to the waiver, visit http://tusseymountainback.com/events/tussey-teasers. All six runs of the series are free and include timing and some random prizes.

Your donations of gently used running shoes will be accepted at each run for a program that supports entrepreneurs in communities and countries around the world.

Tussey Teasers Series Note: All runners who complete Teaser #1 through Teaser #5 will be eligible for a grand prize to be awarded at the end of Teaser #5, the Eager Seeger Half Marathon, on June 27. Those who also completed this run, Teaser #0, will earn a special bonus.

All series participants and spectators must wear masks and social distance.

At the start: Runners line up for the start at the Lake Road parking lot of Colyer Lake.

Fun on the lake: Runners ventured easily onto the frozen lake. Several people were ice fishing today. 

Winners: Chloe Connor and Mark Puleo with booty from today’s win.
