Rothrock State Forest
by Mike Casper
Sixteen degrees “in town” typically means about 10 degrees in Rothrock State Forest. Add a healthy breeze and you get the celebrated ’Sno Big Deal race conditions. Ice fishing was active on Colyer Lake, with ice thickness over 8 inches. The course roads were 99% snow or ice covered for this kickoff run of the 2022 Tussey Teasers Series. The unmaintained part of Boal Gap Road that harbors the course turnaround point was fairly flat with snow cover, which made for better footing than usual.
The first three runners finished under the course record. Mark Puleo reprised victory from last year, taking more than 3 minutes off the course record, with Winter Parts just seconds behind, and Jason Sammut in third. Amy Puleo was the first woman finisher and came within 7 seconds of breaking the course record. Diane Swauger took second and Crystal McNeal was third.
Other runners who bettered their 2021 times were Jason Sammut (over 1 min), Diane Swauger (over 2.5 min), Crystal and Brent McNeal (nearly 2 min) and Marvin Hall (over 6 min).
Several donations were made to support the Dyslexia Reading Center of Central PA. Thanks to those donors!
The next run of the six-event Tussey Teasers series is the Laurel Run Switchbacker 10K, set for March 5, with start and finish at Tussey Mountain. For the series schedule and a link to the event waivers, visit http://tusseymountainback.com/events/tussey-teasers. All six runs of the series are free and include timing and some random prizes.
