The first
Nittany Valley Running Club Indoor Mile of the 2003-04 season was one
of our most successful ever. Two heats, over twenty runners, and some
great races. In the fast heat, Jason Manbeck and Mark Boyer lead most
of the way until Rod Stahl caught them with less than 2 laps to go.
Jason and Mark then fought with each other to the very end, finishing
within a second of each other. Four runners broke the 5 minute mark,
and one more was close enough to make some vows for another day.
Another large group of six runners came within six seconds of each
other, with John Sheakoski and Mitch Shipley battling to within 0.2
seconds. All runners in the first heat were comfortably under 6
minutes. In the second heat, Beth Parker, fresh from her victory in the
Nittany Valley Half-Marathon, stole the show in 5:39. The first 5
runners broke 6 minutes. Marty Klanchar, Mike Casper, and Marty Mazur
ran hard against each other trading leads frequently, but did not start
their kicks early enough to break 6 flat. First-timer Karl Leitzel met
his goal of sub-7 and is now recalibrating his sights. Everyone gets
two more chances in this year's series to sear their lungs and meet
their goals.
