2nd Annual Herbie's Home "Town Loop"

Once again, under blue skies and a bright sun, 245 participants in the second annual Herbie's Hometown Loop paid tribute to Jeremy Herbstritt, a Bellefonte native and Penn State graduate who lost his life in the Virginia Tech shootings on April 16, 2007. The 4 mile run/walk kicked off with local race celebrity, George Etzweiler starting the race at 8:30 a.m. The runners/walkers toured a course that Jeremy trained on frequently. It covered the perimeter of Victorian Bellefonte and included a steep climb up South Spring Street. Afterward, runners/walkers enjoyed an array of food and drinks donated by businesses in and around the community. There were nearly 100 participants that donned their bike helmets and headed off for the 16 mile (non-competitive) bike ride at 10:30 a.m. which looped Jacksonville/Lyonstown Road twice and included a short loop through Parkview Heights.
In addition to the run/walk and bike ride, a new event, a 2 mile canoe/kayak was added leaving from Tussey Outfitter's in Bellefonte. Over a dozen canoe/kayakers enjoyed a leisurely trip down Spring Creek ending in Milesburg. In addition, there were many family-friendly activities taking place at the Bellefonte Middle School, including a kids' bike event, bike safety checks, fire truck tours, visits from the Nittany Lion and Ike the Spike, Eat-n-Park cookie decorating, seed planting, kids' games and live entertainment featuring the Phyrst family band.
The Herbstritt family was instrumental in the planning and organization of the event evident by the attention to detail. The intent was to honor their son/brother for the fun-loving and caring person he was and carry on the legacy he never had the chance to fulfill.
Each participant received a packet of seeds to plant their own gardens, reminiscent of Jeremy's passion for gardening. One of Jeremy's favorite pastimes after a hard run was indulging in some Bonfatto's "fire in the hole" chicken wings which were available after the run/walk. There were 32 trees donated and given away in honor of Jeremy and the 31 innocent souls who lost their lives that tragic day. All those who left the event took away a piece of Jeremy's life and were asked to continue his legacy and passion for life.
This event could not take place without the hard work of the race committee, Herbstritt family and MANY community volunteers that make this event successful. We would like to send out a HUGE thank you to all those that contributed their time and talents to honor the memory and continue Jeremy's legacy. Hope to see you all in August 2009!
Matt Smith, local standout was the first male finisher in 23:29, and Martha Nelson winning one of her last local races before moving on to our nations capital, was the first female in 24:07. A special award, the Jeremy Herbstritt Memorial Award, was given in the 20-29 age group. Scott Stringer, a former Bellefonte cross-country and track standout was the recipient finishing in 26:14.
